Insulation Before & After in Los Angeles, CA

Photos show what promises can’t. A Los Angeles attic before insulation looks like bare rafters and exposed ductwork. After, it looks sealed, even, and finished. We post real project photos here because you should see what your money actually buys: dense coverage, clean edges, and air-sealed gaps. Every job below was done by our own crew under the Threshold Standard, with a written price agreed on before we opened a single bag of material.

Blown-In Insulation Over a 1920s Bungalow Ceiling

Blown-in insulation (loose fibers blown into the attic cavity to fill every gap) across a Silver Lake bungalow attic, before and after.

The problem was a 100-year-old ceiling with no insulation at all. Homeowners could feel heat radiating through the plaster by 2 p.m. We air-sealed the penetrations first, then blew GreenFiber cellulose to a consistent R-38 across all 1,100 square feet. The result was a hallway that stopped feeling like a pizza oven by the following afternoon.

Spray Foam Insulation in a Converted Garage Studio

Spray foam insulation before and after on garage rafters in Los Angeles
Closed-cell spray foam applied to open rafters in a converted garage, before and after.

An Eagle Rock garage conversion had a permitted studio but zero thermal barrier in the roof deck. Dust, heat, and street noise came through the gaps along the ridge. We applied Demilec closed-cell foam directly to the underside of the roof sheathing, sealing every seam in one pass. The room now holds 72 degrees while the driveway bakes at 95, and the homeowner can actually record audio in there.

Attic Insulation Replacement After a Raccoon Encounter

Damaged attic insulation replacement before and after in Los Angeles
Contaminated batt insulation removed from a Mid-City attic, then replaced with Owens Corning batts with a fresh vapor barrier.

We don’t ask about the raccoon’s motive. We just deal with the aftermath. The old fiberglass was matted down, soaked, and torn to shreds by unwelcome guests. Our crew vacuumed the entire cavity, sanitized the decking, and laid fresh Owens Corning batts at R-30. The attic smells neutral again, and the upstairs bedroom no longer spikes to 88 degrees by noon.

Blown-In Top-Up Over Existing Fiberglass in the Valley Floor

A thin layer of 1990s fiberglass topped up with Knauf blown-in fiberglass to reach R-38.

Some homes get a thin smear of insulation in the 90s and never see it again. This Sherman Oaks attic had about four inches of flattened fiberglass. It compresses under its own weight and loses R-value within a decade. We blew Knauf loose-fill over the existing layer without removing it, bringing the total to R-38. Energy bills dropped the next billing cycle, and the second floor finally matched the thermostat.

Air Sealing Around Recessed Lights and Ceiling Boxes Before Insulation

Air sealing around recessed lights before blown-in insulation in Los Angeles
Gaps around recessed can lights sealed with foam and fire-rated covers before blown-in installation.

Blown-in insulation doesn’t do its job if the air leaks around it. This Mar Vista home had a dozen recessed lights acting as little chimneys, pulling conditioned air into the attic. We installed fire-rated covers over each can, then sealed the ceiling boxes with spray foam. Only after that did we blow the insulation. The homeowner called it a noticeable difference within 48 hours, and they specifically mentioned the living room not feeling drafty after dark.

Spray Foam in a Cathedral Ceiling Over a Hillside Room Addition

Spray foam insulation in a cathedral ceiling before and after in Los Angeles
A cathedral ceiling in Los Feliz before spray foam, and after Icynene open-cell foam filled the rafter bays to R-21.

Cathedral ceilings leave almost no room for traditional batts, and they turn into heat traps fast. This Los Feliz addition had a pitched ceiling with zero ventilation and two skylights. We sprayed Icynene open-cell foam directly between the rafters, filling the full cavity. The room dropped from 84 to 74 degrees on the same afternoon, and the echo in the space softened noticeably because the foam deadens sound.
