GreenFiber Attic Insulation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
GreenFiber attic insulation in Los Angeles typically costs $1,850 to $3,600 installed for a standard 1,500-square-foot attic, and we stock GreenFiber-compatible material on our trucks for same-week installs in most LA neighborhoods. Most homeowners call us after noticing uneven room temperatures, a spike in summer cooling bills, or dusty air seeping through ceiling fixtures. The insulation itself rarely “fails” visibly; it settles, compresses, gets water-damaged, or was simply under-installed years ago, and the symptoms show up in your comfort and utility bill long before you ever climb into the attic to look.

We’re an independent Los Angeles insulation contractor, not a GreenFiber distributor or affiliate. That matters because we’re free to match the right GreenFiber product to your home’s actual needs instead of pushing one SKU. And since 2002, we’ve been doing exactly that across the LA basin, from Woodland Hills to Eagle Rock.
Which GreenFiber Models This Applies To
GreenFiber makes three product families relevant to attics: SANCTUARY blown-in cellulose, R-STABLE blown-in cellulose, and INS550 spray-applied cellulose. Most LA attics with existing GreenFiber insulation have a blown-in cellulose product, because it fills irregular joist bays and around plumbing stacks far better than batts. If you look in your attic and see gray, fluffy material that looks like shredded newspaper (which is exactly what it is, treated with borates), that’s cellulose.
The compatibility question isn’t about “models” the way it is with an HVAC unit. What matters is the R-value depth and the settled density. GreenFiber’s coverage charts specify that SANCTUARY needs 8.5 inches of settled depth to hit R-30, or 10.5 inches for R-38. Here’s the gotcha we see constantly in Los Angeles attics: blown-in cellulose settles 13% to 20% over the first few years. An attic insulated to R-38 in 2018 can be performing at R-30 today. Our techs measure actual settled depth with a depth gauge before any recommendation, because adding fresh GreenFiber on top of settled material is far more cost-effective than a full removal and reinstall in most cases.
One more compatibility reality specific to California: GreenFiber makes a borate-only formula required for California Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) fire zones. If you’re in Sunland, Tujunga, Porter Ranch, or the hills above Glendale, you may be legally required to use the borate-only version when topping up. We stock both formulas on our trucks. We also carry Reflectix radiant barrier for LA attics where the bigger win is blocking radiant heat gain through the roof deck, and we’ll recommend it only when the attic actually calls for it.
Signs Your GreenFiber Attic Insulation Is Failing
- Rooms heat up unevenly, especially upstairs. Cellulose settles in the center of joist bays first, leaving the edges thin. That 2-inch gap around each bay is enough to let attic heat radiate down into specific rooms, which is why one bedroom feels fine while the one across the hall bakes by 3pm.
- Summer electric bills climb while your AC runs constantly. In Los Angeles, under-insulated attics routinely reach 130°F in August. When your GreenFiber depth has settled below R-30 equivalent, your AC works harder every single afternoon. We’ve seen July bills drop 25% to 35% after a proper top-up in the Valley.
- You spot water stains on the ceiling or smell mustiness near attic access. GreenFiber cellulose loses R-value dramatically when wet, and it holds moisture against ceiling drywall, inviting mold. A roof leak, a bathroom vent exhausting into the attic instead of outside, or a disconnected dryer vent are the usual culprits we trace.
- Dust and tiny fibers are showing up around recessed lights or ceiling registers. Old or improperly installed cellulose breaks down into fine particulates over 20-plus years. If you’re dusting ceiling fans twice as often as you used to, the insulation is degrading and likely under-performing.
- Pests have been through the attic. Rats and mice love tunneling through cellulose. Their trails compress the material and their nesting tears it apart. We regularly find 30% to 40% effective R-value loss in attics with active or past rodent activity, even after the pests are gone.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard Los Angeles attic of 1,200 to 1,800 square feet, here’s what installed pricing looks like:
- Top-up over existing GreenFiber (most common): $950 to $1,700, bringing settled depth to R-38 or R-44 depending on your existing material and ceiling type.
- Full removal of water-damaged or pest-infested cellulose and fresh GreenFiber install: $2,400 to $4,200, including disposal, air-sealing of top plates and penetrations, and new GreenFiber SANCTUARY blown to R-38.
- GreenFiber plus Reflectix radiant barrier (hot-attic Zone 2 homes): add $1,100 to $1,800 depending on attic configuration and gable accessibility.
Every quote from Aspen Attic Insulation is a written price delivered before any work starts. No post-job surprises, no “we discovered X” upcharges. The number we hand you is the number you pay. And the work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the insulation isn’t performing as specified within a year, we return and fix it free, in writing, covering labor and materials. Part of the reason we can make that promise is that we only install GreenFiber to the manufacturer’s published depth charts, measured with a gauge, not by eyeballing it.

DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely measure your current depth yourself: bring a ruler into the attic and check at least six points across the space. If you’re seeing 5 to 7 inches of settled GreenFiber where you need 10.5 for R-38, you’ve confirmed the problem. You should also check for obvious water staining or rodent sign.
What you shouldn’t do is run a rented blower and buy loose cellulose yourself. The borate dust is a respiratory irritant you don’t want in your lungs without proper PPE, and getting GreenFiber’s density right requires calibrating the machine to the manufacturer’s settings, which varies by hose length and elevation. Too loose and you don’t hit the R-value; too dense and you overload the ceiling drywall. Most importantly, working in a hot LA attic with a running electrical blower is genuinely unsafe if you don’t know how to stage your work and stay hydrated. Call us at (213) 376-3824 and we’ll have a background-checked, uniformed technician at your door with a name and photo sent to you before the visit. If anyone else shows up, the visit is free.
FAQs
GreenFiber cellulose performs effectively for 20 to 30 years when kept dry and pest-free, but real-world LA conditions (summer attic temperatures over 130°F, Santa Ana dry spells, and occasional roof leaks) cause measurable settling within the first 3 to 5 years. We recommend checking settled depth every 5 years, and topping up when it falls below your target R-value. Call (213) 376-3824 for a free depth assessment.
In most cases it can simply be topped up. If the material is dry, free of mold, and pest trails are manageable, we blow fresh GreenFiber on top to restore R-value at roughly half the cost of removal and replacement. Full removal is only warranted when there’s water damage, heavy pest contamination, or the cellulose has broken down into dust. We’ll show you photos from the attic before recommending either path.
A typical top-up on a 1,500-square-foot Los Angeles attic takes 3 to 4 hours from setup to cleanup, including air-sealing around top plates, can lights, and plumbing vents before blowing. Full removal jobs run 1 to 2 days, depending on access and how much material is being extracted.
Yes. Our Los Angeles crews carry GreenFiber SANCTUARY in both standard and borate-only California WUI formulations, plus coverage charts matched to our blower calibration. If your attic needs it, we have it on-site the day of the job, not after a week of waiting on a distributor.
